Something Wierd On My Hamstring

A hamstring strain injury occurs when 1 or more of the 3 hamstring muscles or tendons (at the back of the thigh) is torn, either partially or completely. It is one of the most common injuries of the lower body, particularly affecting athletes participating in sports involving high-speed running, such as football, soccer, or track. And Unnie is just standing above me. I was sleeping with my Todoroki and Naruto plushies. You're a bigger weeb than I am.' 'Yeah right, listen get up. I need you for something.' Unnie says seriously. I get up and follow her into her room and see the various Bakugo and Sasuke posters, plushies, and figurines.

Cool Running:: Leg Pain behind Knee leg pain behind knee moderator:Leg Pain behind Knee AuthorTopic: Leg Pain behind Kneemiles99999Memberposted Oct-25-2006 03:44 PMI have searched these posts high and low and was reluctant to post this but I am at a loss. In short here is my problem:Pain behind my knee (not behind knee cap, literally the back of my leg, the back of the knee), started last night at about mile 11 of a 14 mile MP run. The pain wasn't that bad, almost just bothersome.

I slowed my pace and it subsided a bit.I am assuming it is probably overuse (ran 18 on Saturday and moved a 1/2 ton shed on Saturday also), but I was wondering if anyone could clue me in on what it could be. It is almost like my lower, lower hamstring where it attaches behind the knee. There is no inflammation and isn't sore to the touch today.Any and all advice would be much appreciated. I will probably take it easy tonight. I am in the middle of my taper for the NYC Marathon.IP:iGot2RunCool Runnerposted Oct-25-2006 10:13 PMIt does sound like you pulled a hamstring. I'm dealing with the same issue right now.

Check out the 'pains and aches' area it has some great advice.I have been using RICE, stretching, and massaging with 'The Stick', it's much better today (I think I pulled it on Sunday). I haven't stopped running because of this, seems like runnning might actually help it heal.Speed work and hills might be the culprit for my pain.Good luck. This message has been edited by iGot2Run (edited Oct-25-2006).IP:miles99999Memberposted Oct-26-2006 03:34 PMAppreciate the feedback, but it isn't a pulled hamstring (unfortunately I am very much familiar with pulled hamstring muscles from my days of playing lacrosse).I went for a very easy 4-mile run this morning and the discomfort was still there. Not really painful but definitely a noticible feeling of discomfort.

It pretty much goes from right behind my knee to the top of my calf. Maybe I strained a ligament or something.IP:erietomMemberposted Oct-27-2006 10:04 PMI had the exact same thing on mile 52 of a 12 hour ultra last Saturday. Top of my calf / back of my knee.

It felt better the next day, but took 3 or 4 days before I didn't notice it anymore. At first I thought it was a cramp, but since it lasted / hurt for several hours afterward, I thought perhaps I strained something.IP:aemalaMemberposted Oct-29-2006 07:57 PMFINALLY. Someone who has the exact same symptoms as me. I too have scoured the internet to try to diagnose the problem. I've had this pain now every time I run since April.

I took 2 MONTHS off this summer in case it was something pulled in order to let it heal, and as soon as I ran again, the pain returned. I just recently saw an orthopedist, and he's not certain what's wrong with it. X-ray was negative for anything. He put me on Celebrex anti-inflammatories for 2 weeks and told me to run again to see if I still have pain. I ran 1 mile on Saturday, but the pain is still there. 'll be going back again this week for a followup.IP:MarkGuyCool Runnerposted Oct-30-2006 11:48 PMYeah, I think I have this too. I can't find much on it and most runners I mention this to go 'huh?'

I describe it almost as feeling like my leg got hyper-extended.I first felt this on my last 20 miler before Detroit. I wrote it off as a fluke and never felt it much during the taper. However at mile 11 yesterday it came back and I rode it all the way home. Now I don't know what to do. I'm planning a fairly serious decline in mileage this month, swimming instead. I hope that helps.Miles99999 good luck at NYC, if you can come back and post what happens.MarkIP:CrazyEyeCool Runnerposted Oct-31-2006 07:49 AMI had something similar a while back. In addition to what you described, my leg felt stiff and it hurt to extend it from a seated position.I went to a sports medicine doctor about it, and he saw a bulge behind my knee.

He was able to get rid of it temporarily by pushing on it a certain way, and at that time he was confident that it was a Baker's Cyst. He had me get an MRI a few days later to make sure that the cyst wasn't being caused by a menicus tear. The MRI came back negative - for the tear and the cyst! Yet, I still had pain/discomfort. His only explanation was that the discomfort was caused by a hamstring pull - not in the typical area, but very low behind the knee. He practically denied that he said previously that it was a Baker's Cyst. But, I still think that's what it was.His advice, which I took, was to not run on it until I'd been pain free for two weeks.

Unfortunately, that took several months. But, it is pretty much fully recovered. I only feel a little stiffness when I cross my leg for too long.I think mine was caused by a combination of two things. My orthotics had just been adjusted, and I think they were over-adjusted.

Also, I took a 35 mile bike ride without working up to that mileage. This message has been edited by CrazyEye (edited Oct-31-2006).IP:PJ49Cool Runnerposted Oct-31-2006 06:08 PMI couldn't believe I was actually reading this post. Like others, I have spent hours looking for information but just couldn't find anything.I almost feel like a cramp right behind my knee and that it is wanting to hyperextend.

I have an actual knot on the left side on that cord like piece (tendon?) that runs from the hamstring to the calf. It sometimes is difficult to walk because it cramps up.My knee is stiff and I know I have fluid on it. Business 2 nd puc 2019 syiiabus.

I had a bakers cyst behind that same knee a couple of years ago but this is different. I'm getting depressed because I haven't been able to run in 4 weeks. It's just so weird and doesn't seem to fit the usual problems you read about.I suppose I should go to the doctors but I thought maybe if it just needed RICE I'd try that first.I'd love to hear if anyone gets an actual diagnosis.IP:dgb2nCool Runnerposted Oct-31-2006 06:16 PMCount me in for similar symptoms. Its my right knee only and its directly behind the kneecap running down the center of my leg. Maybe a total of 3 inches.Of all my running aches and pains though, this seems to be the one that I can run on and ignore.

I notice it more before and after runs.Hope someone gets a positive diagnosis on this-IP:goal2runCool Runnerposted Nov-01-2006 02:25 PMquote:Originally posted by miles99999:Pain behind my knee (not behind knee cap, literally the back of my leg, the back of the knee), started last night at about mile 11 of a 14 mile MP run. Part of the culprit is the bottom of the hamstring where it attaches to the upper thigh. The other part is the triangular muscle or tendon, popleteal it's called, behind the knee on the back of the leg that gets stressed or injured. The PT gave me some exercises to do, did ultrasound, heat, deep tissue massage, then iced it for about 2 minutes. He said to reduce amount of running and do it very slowly or cross-train for a couple of weeks, gave me some stretches, and I will go in 3 times a week for 2 weeks for therapy. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of taking a couple weeks off from running. I have the NYC Marathon on Sunday and I can't miss it.I have eased up my pace over the past week or so, and I haven't had any real discomfort. In the back of my mind I still know that there is something there that just isn't right. The only time it really seems to bother me now is if I press it too hard and after a run.I just hope that I can make it through Sunday with no pain and a solid finish.Thank you everyone for your thoughts!!!IP:Forestina GumpCool Runnerposted Nov-01-2006 07:30 PMActually I had the same pain behind my knee too when I was Training for a Marathon. Mine turned out to be a Horizontal cleavage tear of the medial Meniscus. It started bothering me at the end of a 10 miler Long Run.

But when I tried to do a 13 miler a few weeks later. Boy was I in Pain! Made my whole leg hurt. My initial thought was another torn hamstring. But when I finally got in to see the Orthopedic Doctor and he took a MRI It turned out to be the Meniscus.I couldn't believe that a little tear that didn't need surgery caused so much pain and sorness! I did about 8 weeks of Physical Therapy. Slowly, I'm finally getting back to Running.

But I decided on my own that I will have to keep my weekly mileages between 20-25 miles per week next year in order to keep injury free. Because it seemed like for me, once I tried getting beyond 25 miles per week that is when the problem started.ForestinaIP:aussiegalMemberposted Nov-01-2006 11:12 PMI'll be the one with the stiff left leg hobbling along into Manhatten with you!!! Am about to do apply RICE for exactly the same thing. I also cannot back out of NYC, so I guess this will be a test of how much pain one can endure. As Dean Karzarnes says - it's just not running if there's no pain!-IP:miles99999Memberposted Nov-02-2006 09:45 AMI think I am going to be downing the Tylenol or Advil (I know it masks the actual problem.I just don't care). It is going to be all about just making it through those 26.2 mile (plus the 1/2 mile to get my stuff out of the UPS truck) with as little leg pain as possible.Good luck AussieGal. If you happen to be in the Green Start, look for me. Bib # 9233 (I think).IP:wgbiddleCool Runnerposted Nov-03-2006 09:36 AMSeems like most people got this pain with high mileage.

I got this pain behind my knee last night. It was cold so I was going to do a short 4.5 mile run. My first mile was slow to warm up. My second mile I picked it up and was going at a pretty good clip.

At about the 2.5 mile mark, I got a sharp intense pain that lasted about a split second at the back of my knee when when I was extending it forward for my next step. Stretched my calves. Walked a little and then tried to start back at the pace I was running. For 50 yards or so I did fine and then it happened again. Walked some more, then started a slow jog back home. The last half mile or so was at a normal pace. This morning my calf and back of the knee are a little achy but I get around just fine.no limping or stiffness.

It just feels like it would post-muscle cramp. I guess I just pulled something.IP:goal2runCool Runnerposted Nov-03-2006 03:05 PMMiles 99999PT said to stretch before, and after run.BUT also to ice that area after running. When I go in he puts heat on it, ultrasounds it, massages it (very deep tissue, hurts like the dickens) then ices it. He actually sees a lot of runners, he said most injuries come from overuse. But hey running is fun.Goodluck in the NYC MarathonIP:rundadrunCool Runnerposted Nov-03-2006 03:15 PMmile99999,I posted about this a little over a year ago and got almost no response.

Had the same exact pain with increased mileage and then it bothered me all the time. I had the whole MRI to rule out the meniscus and nothing showed up. It went away on it's own after some rest.

I didn't feel it at all in the ramp up to my May marathon, so I hope yours goes away for good too.Good luck at the NYC!Rob-That which doesn't kill you will probably only hurt REAL bad.IP:imamamaof2Cool Runnerposted Nov-03-2006 04:40 PMSounds like what I'm experiencing right now. I wonder if that could casue it, too?IP:miles99999Memberposted Nov-06-2006 12:58 PMTo everyone who posted a response to my initial message, thank you.I successfully completed the NYC Marathon yesterday afternoon with no pain in the legs, aside from the normal aches and pains of running 26.2 miles. If anyone cares, I ran it in 3:51:11, a bit off of my goal of 3:43, but I am OK with it. It was an awesome day, perfect weather and the crowds were tremendous. For anyone who hasn't run NY, it is an amazing experience. This was my three one and it gets better every year. Thanks again everyone!IP:goal2runCool Runnerposted Nov-06-2006 01:40 PMThat is fantastic. I can only wonder what a feeling of accomplishment it must be to finish a marathon.

I am hoping to do the Virginia Beach Rock 'n Roll 1/2 marathon next year. I want to roll it into a family vacation. I love NYC so maybe someday I will shoot for that lofty goal.Again congrats and goodluck with the knee.IP:MarkGuyCool Runnerposted Nov-06-2006 04:41 PMquote:Originally posted by miles99999:To everyone who posted a response to my initial message, thank you.I successfully completed the NYC Marathon yesterday afternoon with no pain in the legs, aside from the normal aches and pains of running 26.2 miles. If anyone cares, I ran it in 3:51:11, a bit off of my goal of 3:43, but I am OK with it. Hearing that you seem to have avoided a serious injury by backing off gives me hope that I can do the same. Thanks for reporting back.IP:All times are Eastern Time (US).
